In fact if the speed across the ground is high then you need to be in (top) 5th gear or the engine would be over reving. The same road / ground speed in 4th gear would be reving the engine (much higher) too high for the same groung speed. So 5th is ok unless you slow down (way) too much in 5th and then accelerate, don't do that as the engine speed will be too low and the engine will labour, shift down for the lower ground speeds and up as the engine screams and the ground speed has increased, ie. as you are building up the speed.<br><b>References : </b><br> You will not hurt the bike by just blashing along in 5th gear. Even on a big road bike at highway speeds, during a passing situation, I like to down-shift a gear or 2 to put the engine in a higher revving mode just in case I want an extra burst of speed.<br><b>References : </b><br>35 years of riding experience...
