Here is the answer. /p p Freewheels have long been the Achilles' heel of the single speed industry. The problem has been twofold; 1) dirt gets inside and gums up the mechanism 2) the inexpensive freewheel unit is not precision enough and bearings are easily compromised. /p p Both of these problems plague the consistent engagement of the typical or average inexpensive freewheel. Sometime it may engage at 15 degrees and sometime it may engage at 9 degrees. A true precision freewheel will engage at precisely 10 degrees consistently. Consistent engagement is necessary for proper training and conditioning and is MORE IMPORTANT than having more engagement points. I would rather have a precision freewheel with 36 engagement points that a cassette with 72 engagement points that is NOT precision quality. COMPARE: as true Precision cassettes are typically well over $500 just for the parts. /p p Think about it!
